~Plant Craft for Kids

PARTS OF THE PLANT

This is a fun activity to have the kids do during or after discussing parts of a plant.

~Final Reflection~

Reflect on what you have learned about AUPs and ICT planning in this Unit.

There are so many things that I have learned from this course.
I can only start from the very first activity in the unit.
 - What are ICTs?

Just as a child learns to speak without knowing how to write their language or even what conventions are correct, I obtained experiences in the uses of many technologies never wondering what they may be called collectively.
I've never taken into consideration that maybe as an institution we should have documents with policies on use and management of our tech.

This unit has shown me the importance of having a plan to improve our use of technology in our schools. It made me realize how I've not yet used ICT's to their full potential.
I see how full integration can create a learning environment that can only benefit both students and teachers in our advancing society.

Along with this, I have grasped how important it is to have a security plan in place.
The AUP's give us guidelines on how ICT's are distributed, how students and teachers should conduct themselves in the handling of technology and online behaviors.

AUP's give us a safe environment in which to explore the world of information and communication.

At this time, we are taking an approach that is only fairly secure. Without the proper documents in place, I see the risks we are taking.
It is my hope that as we grow technologically as a school, we come to examine policies that should be in place. This thought is a direct result of exposure to this unit, ICTs and AUPs.

~ACR RECOMMENDATIONS~

ACR RECOMMENDATIONS

After reviewing and discussing the ACR’s technology section, here are the recommendations that we are suggesting.

The ACR states in Section B, subsection 9.1

'Makes appropriate use of education technology (computers, overhead projector, etc.), learning centers and teaching aids.’

Instead of this, the ACR can be hone in on specific areas such as:

1. Makes use of any type of technology during a lesson as a tool of enhancement or assessment.

2. Allows students to participate in the use of technology during the lesson or as an assignment for assessment.

3. Makes an effort to use technology as a communication or record keeping tool.

In order for teachers to be assessed on their use of technology, the administration needs to be knowledgeable on the various types of technology and how the wide array in which they are used. Teacher’s need to provided with opportunity to expand on the requirement of using technology; therefore, our ministry needs to find ways to incorporate technology into our curriculum.

KEY STANDARDS 2 - Collaboration

Key Technology Standards 2

By

Kara Smith           Garvin Tynes Primary School            Generalist

ICT’s can be utilized in every subject area. Here are three standards that can be added to the curriculum to integrate ICT’s.

1. Cultural Diversity Exposure: Our social subjects (Social Studies, Religious Studies, Family Life and Health Education as well as Science) provide an excellent platform to diversify students’ knowledge of our world. Every topic is an opportunity to look at our world from a compare/contrast view. This sensitizes students to the world and inspires them to open their minds and creates a thirst for knowledge. Discuss marine animals in The Bahamas and then display underwater life in other areas of the world.  Explain worship as we see it in our communities and then expose clips of people around the world worshipping in different ways. Compare city maps around world. There are so many ways to use ICT’s to expose cultural diversity and integrate it into the social areas of our curriculum.

2. Introduction to Email: It’s time to encourage a professional use of ICT’s from an earlier start in education. Once a student is capable of creating a piece of writing, they have the capacity to compose emails. This is would be a welcomed integration into areas such as Creative Writing and Reading Comprehension Assignments.

3. Assessment and Evaluation: It’s important in this digital age to create different types of assessment for our students. In particular, assignments that will help them to become digital citizens, and prepare them for a technological world. We can make use of applications that help create online quizzes, research responsibility and preparations of presentations.

MANAGEMENT OF ICT RESOURCES AND FACILITIES

At our school, the ICT’s available can be accessed by any member of staff at any given time as long as they are available. We use a register to sign for items. We must include the date taken and the date returned. There is no schedule set for use of technologies. It’s a first come, first served basis.
As far as ICT’s available for students, those are accessed by them during scheduled class times and under supervision.
After school, an ICT could be signed out and used by teachers, but there must be an agreement set up to secure the item.
The only ICT facility we have would be the computer lab and library. These are constantly supervised by our librarian and computer teacher. There is a Promethean Board installed at our school, however it does not have a room of its own. They are, instead, mounted in two homeroom classes. They are still available to the entire school as the teachers whose classrooms they are in will switch with the person wanting use of it.
We don’t have a clear, handwritten policy about the use of ICT’s in our school. Instead it is just understood by everyone how they are managed. We work as a team sharing without monopolizing the ICT’s for longer than needed.

~Inspire Reading~

Hey! Get kids motivated to read with this cute bookmark craft. Tell them how to use it and give them opportunity to put it to use with notebooks, textbooks, and reading books!

Reflective Blog -

lesson plan with integrated ICT's

Cause and Effect

Previously, this lesson was taught without catering to every learning styles. Mostly visual learners would benefit from this lesson. Definitions were written on the board and examples shown and read.

ICT’s were integrated by way of audio tools and YouTube video clips. Slates were used as well for matching cause to effect in an activity to drag slanted lines to the correct answers.

The presentation became alive with visuals, audio and live actions of cause and effect examples.

ICT’s made the lesson come to life and made the thinking easier for the students. In that way it did support their thinking skills.
The timing of the lesson was too long, trying to incorporate all learning styles. Though the lesson was enjoyable, it wasn’t good for time on task.
